Charlotte K. Mathis MPAS, PA-C, NBC-HWC

Raised on a working horse & cattle farm in Virginia Hunt Country, I have been able to speak with animals since I was a young child and thought everyone could do the same. I began riding horses at age 6 and quickly joined Loudoun Hunt Pony Club, competed in hunters, the National Capital Equitation League & three day eventing. I started foxhunting as a junior in Loudoun & Fauquier Counties, was an exercise rider and trainer, and worked on a ranch in the Rocky Mountains. As an adult, I developed a great love for dressage thanks to phenomenal instructors and a few very special upper level & Grand Prix mounts.

My unwavering love for creatures of all sizes led me to complete an undergraduate degree at Virginia Tech in Animal & Equine Science. While in college, I worked & interned in companion and equine animal hospitals. I was a equine research assistant at the Middleburg Agricultural Research & Extension Center and the Marion duPont Scott Equine Medical Center, part of Virginia Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine. I completed externships at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital & Hagyard Equine Medical Institute in Lexington, Kentucky.

Blending my love for healing and dedication to medicine, I completed my medical training at James Madison University. I practiced in both surgical specialties and clinical medicine and have extensive experience in academic medical institutions. I taught nursing and medical students, oversaw physician residents and was a clinical instructor & lecturer at University of Washington School of Medicine. I’ve also spoken at medical education conferences. I completed Duke University Medicine’s Integrative Health Coach Professional Training Program and am a National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach.

My veterinary & medical experience provides a strong framework for my animal communication skills by giving me a deep understanding of the physiological and behavioral aspects of animals. As a result, I can easily & effectively interpret what an animal shares and explain it using accurate anatomical & disease state terminology. I approach animals with the same care as my human patients and seek to develop immediate rapport, minimize stress and promote trust— all of which are essential for effective and open communication.

Understanding how energy impacts both animals and humans is an critical aspect of my work. I have studied many holistic approaches to healing, including integrative medicine, meditation, various spiritual traditions, Family Constellation Therapy, Qi Gong and Healing Touch. I am also a Reiki Master & Teacher.
